Hello Brothers and Sisters in Christ!  Welcome to Christian’s blog.

Right now, we are studying one of the most important topics for the church.  The study is titled “Christian Divisions, Denominations, Separations, How Can We Know What Is True? – The Mind of Christ“.  Your participation is very much appreciated.  Your comments will always be included as long as they remain respectful of others and do not include profanity.

We’d like to thank you for your participation by including your name in a drawing for either a FREE Bible or your choice of a number of classic Christian books such as “Pilgrims Progress” or “The Martyrs Mirror”!   To qualify, you need only to comment once in this study.  The winner will be announced at the conclusion of the study.

Lord willing, Part 3 of this study will be posted in the evening on Tuesday, May 22nd.  In the meantime, you’ll find Parts 1 and 2 below!

God bless you as you walk in His path.

Hello there!  Welcome to this 2nd post discussing the church, its 38,000+ denominations, and how we can and should do away with them and regain the unity of the body of Christ!  If you are visiting this blog for the first time, then please scroll down to the previous post before reading this one!  Thanks!

First the Bad News, Then the Good News!

Before we carry on with this study I should tell you that I dwell on the negative before I dwell on the positive.  I give the bad news first, but there’s good news coming!  This blog may feel very negative right now, but hang in there!  There is always a solution.  “With God, all things are possible.”

Personal Bias – The Greatest Hindrance to Spiritual Growth

Can the church settle its differences in one great big debate?  Let’s say an Amish Elder, Baptist Pastor, Lutheran Pastor, United Church of Christ Pastor, Catholic Priest, and a Seventh-Day-Adventist Pastor all get together to discuss their beliefs in hopes of doing away with the false doctrines that separate them.  Naturally, they pair up.  What happens in this fictional debate?

Of course, the Amish Elder addresses the Baptist Pastor regarding the need for Christian pacifism.  He quotes scripture such as Matthew 5:44, John 18:36, and Matthew 5:39.

The Baptist Pastor defends his belief that Christians should defend the good ol’ USA and quotes Luke 22:36 as well as many Old Testament accounts or war.  He then accuses the Amish Elder of being legalistic in his way of life and oppressive for making his wife wear a head covering.

The Lutheran (Wisconsin Synod) addresses the United Church of Christ pastor and condemns his affirmation of homosexuality.  He quotes Leviticus 20:13 and 1 Cor. 6:9-10

The United Church of Christ pastor points out that the Lutheran Church is split on the issue of homosexuality and expresses his anger at the Lutheran’s judgmental attitude.  He then quotes Luke 6:37.

The Seventh-Day-Adventist quotes Exodus 20:8 to the Catholic and expresses his feelings toward the Catholic church for changing the Sabbath day from the 7th to the 1st day of the week.  “And by the way,” he says, “the prophecy in Daniel and in the book of Revelation clearly show that the papacy is the BEAST!”

The Catholic priest was a very pious fellow, yet he exclaimed that the Catholic church is the only true church and it didn’t suffer the same divisions as the protestants. “I did not come here to bicker with you but to observe your quarreling.  As to the outrageous claim that the papacy is “the beast” mentioned in our Holy Scriptures, Peter is the foundation of the Catholic church (Matthew 16:18-19), so if you question the authority of the church and if you call the papacy “the beast” then you are calling Peter “the beast” as well!”

Ahhhh, such unity in the Body of Christ!

The Nature of Our Hearts

This is not the transcript of an actual debate, of course, but the denominations mentioned above nearly always present the very same arguments on those topics.  You notice, each denomination is able to support their doctrines with scripture.  Each denomination blames every other denomination for not accepting what the Bible has to say with an open heart.  Even tho this debate never took place, I can guarantee that if anyone could bring those denominations together that many of the same arguments would be made.  It’s as if we Christians say, “I’d be happy for the church to set aside its differences and be of the same mind which is in ME! (Not Christ Jesus)” and all of our favourite verses are bookmarked for quick and easy reference during debates.

We may claim to set aside our bias when we read our Bibles, but we cannot get rid of our bias.  It’s utterly impossible.  We cannot even judge our own hearts.  In Jeremiah 17:9 we read, “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?”

Please Do Not Give UP!

Please remember that God told us in the Bible that we should not be divided.  He wouldn’t tell us not to be divided if there weren’t any way for us to be united, now would He?  Of course not!  Be happy, there is hope!  We’ll pick this up again in the very near future.

God bless you as you walk in His path.

I’m not certain how many denominations there are in the church.  Some would say there are over 38,000 of them.  Isn’t that unreal?   It’s amazing to me!

Not God’s Will:

It certainly isn’t God’s will that there be division in the church.  Philippians 2:5 and 1 Corinthians 1:12-13 make that very clear.  Here’s the text for those verses:

Philippians 2:5  “Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus”.

1 Corinthians 1:12-13  “12Now this I say, that every one of you saith, I am of Paul; and I of Apollos; and I of Cephas; and I of Christ.  13Is Christ divided? was Paul crucified for you? or were ye baptized in the name of Paul?”

Why We Are Divided

Reason 1: Pastors – I am not discounting the value of a good pastor, but since when did pastors become Know-It-Alls regarding all subjects in scripture?  Is it just me, or doesn’t it seem odd to you that pastors have the answer for any question you could possibly conjure up?  And yet, the church is split into thousands of denominations.  How can that be?  If they all have the correct answers, then how is it that the answers are all different from each other?  Obviously, they don’t have as many answers as they think they do.  Furthermore, they lack the humility that’s needed for setting aside personal bias and approaching their beliefs with an open heart toward God.

Reason 2: The Church Elders – What’s a pastor to do?  Let’s say there was a huge division in the church of the Starbelly Sneetches. (Yes, we are talking Dr. Seuss now.)  The Starbelly Sneetches that had Stars on their bellys wouldn’t associate with the Sneetches that had none upon thars.  So that created the first division in their church.  (Of course, the Starbelly Sneetches with stars upon thars had a beautiful cathedral which they named “FIRST Starbelly Church”)

Then came that fateful day when the Star-On machine rolled into town.  As you know, most of the Starbelly Sneetches with no stars on their bellys ran to the machine to get big stars.  However, some went to the church to ask if it were moral to change themselves in this way.  This created yet another split.  The ”Second But Just As Good As First Starbelly Church” suffered a split over stars which created “Third Starbelly Church” which said it was immoral to get new stars and all of the members had none upon thars.

With time, the pastor of ”Second But Just As Good As First Starbelly Church” saw the vanity and the utter chaos within his church and he studied the scriptures with an open heart.  He learned that it was best for Starbellys with no stars on their bellys to be content with how God had made them.  He courageously preached the truth with great conviction to his congregation which had brand new stars on their bellys.  “It was wrong for us to go thru the Star-On machine!  And this is what God says in scripture…”

Now, what do you think the elders of “Second But Just As Good As First Starbelly Church” did to that pastor?  Well, they nearly lynched him for betraying his congregation.  He was removed from the pulpit and was told to go find a congregation in the “Third Starbelly Church” if he wanted to preach such “heresy”.

Pastors may preach the heresies of their denominations, but elders make certain that it stays that way.

Reason 3: US! – Yes, WE share the blame for the divisions in the church.   You might be thinking “I had nothing to do with it!  This all happened LONG before my time!”  That’s true too, but we share the blame for the church REMAINING divided.  Afterall, don’t most Christians find churches that agree with their own personal bias?  Doesn’t it feel good to them to sit in a pew and nod in approval to their pastor’s message?  There is no iron sharpening iron.  (well, not nearly as much as there should be.)

We must study scripture.  Pray and then study.  We must read as much as we can and study, study, study.  Pray, pray, pray!  Why?  We must because the unity of the body of Christ depends on it!  Think about it.  There is only one set of beliefs which are absolutely, positively, unequivocally true.  What I’m speaking of is the mind of Christ.  If we all share His mind, then we cannot be divided.  We share His mind when we read His Word.  There it is.

Does That Mean I Must Be A Know-It-All???

No.  You don’t need to be a know-it-all.  Neither do the pastors, for that matter.  Some Christians would like to impress you with their knowledge of ancient Greek or Hebrew.  Some of the very most educated would REALLY like to impress you with a bit of knowledge regarding the Aramaic language!  However, you don’t need to know everything if you want to have the same mind which is in Christ Jesus.

We can divide all spiritual knowledge into 2 categories.  First, there are the things God wants us to know about.  He wants us to know everything there is to know about our Salvation and how He wants us to live.  Second, there are things that really don’t matter.  If you are a child of God, you will spend eternity with Him regardless of your knowledge of escatology, angelology, thanatology, and countless other -ology’s!

You can know everything God wants you to understand.  If you still don’t know how, then please come back and visit as we will be picking up that study in the next posts.  If the church would focus on these things, there would be unity in the body of Christ.

Unfortunately, the church is divided over many -ology’s.

My family needs my attention.  Lord willing, we’ll pick this up again in the very near future.  I’m once again online and active on this blog.  I look forward to conversing with you.  Let’s have a great study together as brothers and sisters in Christ!

God bless you as you walk in His path.

I really do not want my blog to become a list of links to other blogs and sources of information but sometimes you find something that is so much better than anything you could possibly write and it warrants not only a link but a comment as well.  I have already written a lengthy post regarding Christian Pacifism and I’d like for everyone to find it and comment on my views.  However, this is a link to a very good article as well and I hope you enjoy it…

God bless you!

For those who are not familiar with Geert Wilder’s story… He is an Atheist and a Dutch politician who has been speaking the truth regarding Islam.  He has produced an incredible film which I’ll copy and paste below.  Please keep in mind that this is produced by an Atheist.  Also, I wouldn’t watch this if you have any small children around.

Geert Wilder’s film “FITNA” —>

This film is telling the truth regarding Islam.  Islam is violent and it is at right angles with freedom.  Freedom in the west will not survive along with the Islamization of the west.  This is the truth.

Geert Wilder’s response is to go on the offensive and produce films which reveal this truth.  I would like for Islam to be revealed as well because I don’t think enough people in the church are familiar with what they are up against.  However, the Christian response and the Atheist response are separate.  Geert Wilder would like to stop Islam through political means.  He’d like to outlaw the building of Mosques in Europe.  He’d like to stop immigration from Islamic nations.  He’d like to outlaw the full veil worn by some Muslim women.  He’s not politically correct but he’s correct in his political response… yet it will fail.

Why will Geert fail?

The Christian must identify with the only power capable of combat with Islam.  This power is Grace.  This power is Mercy.  The truth of Jesus Christ is the only power which can overcome the incredible demonic powers in Islam.

Please join me in praying for Geert.  He confronts this evil without the power to overcome and his eternity is at stake.  I’m praying for some way to reach him with the gospel or for someone else close to him to share the good news in a way which is relevant to Geert.  While we are at it, let’s not forget to pray for our enemies.  Can you watch these films and love your enemy?  Examine yourself to see if you are in the faith.  What spirit is in you?  Do you wish to harm them the way they harm us or do you respond in love which only Jesus could produce in you?  If you feel that military action is still justified then please read my post on Christian Pacifism.

Luke 19:10 – For the Son of Man is come to seek and to save that which was lost!

Word of God Speak

“For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.” – Hebrews 4:12

I’m finding myself at a loss for words
And the funny thing is it’s okay
The last thing I need is to be heard
But to hear what You would say

[CHORUS]
Word of God speak
Would You pour down like rain
Washing my eyes to see
Your majesty
To be still and know
That You’re in this place
Please let me stay and rest
In Your holiness
Word of God speak

I’m finding myself in the midst of You
Beyond the music, beyond the noise
All that I need is to be with You
And in the quiet hear Your voice

[REPEAT CHORUS 2x]

I’m finding myself at a loss for words
And the funny thing is it’s okay!

I’ve been at a loss for words myself lately… unable to even post.  This song pretty much sums it up.

My Neighbor

Matthew 22:35-40

Then one of them, which was a lawyer, asked him a question, tempting him, and saying, “Master, which is the great commandment in the law?”

Jesus said unto him, “Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.”

We are still in the USA, selling some things and preparing to return to Asia.  Much of what we have has deteriorated over time in storage and I’ll never really have use for the stuff, yet it is still difficult to let go of EVERYTHING.  The truth is, considering my neighbor, I love myself more.  So, I’m praying for the grace to live as Jesus told us to live.

God has given great victory in my spiritual walk, but the war isn’t over yet.  I just thought I’d share exactly where I’m at in my journey.  I could certainly use prayer, as every Christian could.

Praise God for His Grace and Mercy!
